Movember Hosts Inaugural Global Prostate Cancer Survivorship Summit

Movember, an annual campaign started in Australia to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer, uses November as a time to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men, by growing a moustache for the month of November. Men register for a fundraising page similar to walks, runs, and bike rides, but this time the race is to grow a fabulous mo. Men are to start November 1st clean shaven and for the rest of the month let their mo grow into a walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November as people ask them about their mo which provides the opportunity to start private and public conversations around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

The program recently held it’s first ever Survivorship Summit this June and they gave a great recap. The Movember team was concerned that when it comes to raising funds for prostate cancer funding programs for prostate cancer survivors often takes a back seat to research. Survivorship programs are critical to aiding treatment decisions, providing follow-up care and continued support to ensure all survivors have a meaningful quality of life. To address this, Movember brought together prostate cancer experts from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States for two days of intensive collaboration and knowledge sharing. Check out this video to learn about the challenges of survivorship and how Movember is initiating cooperation to make a tangible impact.

This program is such a perfect fit for Well-Met Men as it is a man-related cause, with man-related events, that it makes sense for us to participate in and support Movember. I participated in Movember last year myself but this year I would like to make a Well-Met team to raise money around Milwaukee for this great cause and plan an event or two around Milwaukee to encourage men to participate in this wholly man-related cause. If interested in helping please contact me at kevin@wellmetman.com.
